Tomorrow is College Day at Dolvin! Students are invited to wear a shirt highlighting their favorite team!
Topics:
Reading Characters, setting, & plot; How do characters / settings contribute to the story?
We’re reading Because of Winn Dixie aloud and stopping throughout each chapter to discuss how the author develops the character thru feelings, actions, thoughts, and dialogue. We are also highlighting how the setting and characters complement each other, and how things might be different with a different setting. We hope to have this transfer over into our own narrative writing.
Writing Personal Narrative; How can I develop my characters as an author?
One thing I’ve noticed most of the students need some practice with is forming complete sentences in their responses….by 3rd grade, capitals and punctuation are expected (without reminders), and sentences should “echo” the question and be more developed with description that prior years. We’ve practiced that more this past week in conversation, on Kahoot, and on paper. A helpful strategy was highlighting the “echo” part of the question, and I will continue to model this and ask students to use this strategy when they are working independently.
Grammar Nouns (plural nouns and irregular plural nouns)
Math
On Place value concepts, thru thousands, including rounding (nearest 10s, 100s, and 1,000s) and solving word problems.
Some vocabulary we have used include digit, place value, and value. We also talked about comma placement (between thousands and hundreds). Regrouping in addition and subtraction gets messy, so please encourage working carefully & checking over work (inverse operation is a fabulous strategy!)
Please practice addition & subtraction math facts. Skip counting the first 12 multiples would be fabulous! (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24)
Adv area & perimeter of rectangles and irregular polygons
Students commonly forget to include “square units” in their responses for area measurements, and “units” for perimeter. We’ll keep practicing.
Please practice subtraction & multiplication math facts. Skip counting the first 12 multiples would be fabulous! (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24)
Science Habitats and adaptations – habitats found in GA and the common animals that live there.
Important Dates:
Tuesday, September 3: Book Fair browsing (during school hours). Be on the lookout for your student’s wish list!
Wednesday, September 4: Curriculum Night 6:30-7:30pm
Wish List for our classroom:
Small, inexpensive items for treasure box.
Enjoy the longer weekend – with the storm coming in south of us, it seems many people will be headed north this holiday weekend instead of the beach. Safe travels!
